Queensland’s fire safety laws have changed and every home will soon need to comply.
If you’re renting, selling, or renovating, these rules already apply to you. For everyone else, compliance is required by the end of this year, so now’s the time to upgrade and protect your family.
To be compliant, your smoke alarms must:
- Be photoelectric (provide earlier warning)
- Be less than 10 years old
- Be installed in every bedroom
- Be interconnected when one goes off, they all go off
- Be installed on every level of the home
- Be installed in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling

How long does it take to complete an upgrade of my Smoke Alarms?
We can do a complete upgrade within ten working days. It normally takes between an hour and an hour and a half depending on the size of the home. Once done we clean up, leave no mess, instruct you on how the devices work and issue a compliance certificate on the spot. We also leave a sticker under the sink with our phone number and a QR code to scan for help when you need it. Each year we will give you a reminder that it is time to do the annual service.
Are all smoke alarm brands the same?
No, definitely not. The brand and model of a smoke alarm play a major role in how well it performs and how often it false alarms. That’s why we offer a range of smoke alarm options to suit different budgets and priorities: Budget alarms, Mid-range alarms & Premium alarms. Choosing the right smoke alarm brand isn’t just about compliance, it’s about protecting your home and family with equipment that performs when it matters most. Why are smoke alarms important?
All Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years, or sooner if they are not functioning properly or have been damaged. It’s rare that any photo-optical alarm will go the full ten years without issues as they sample so much air over that time that contaminants build up within them that affect their performance. That is why regular professional servicing is so essential – to regularly clean, reset and recalibrate them.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Smoke alarms are crucial for early detection of smoke or fire in your home. They provide an early warning that allows you and your family to evacuate quickly. Did you know when you sleep you have no sense of smell? A fire will double in size every thirty seconds. Generally, you are relying on the loud sound of the smoke alarms to alert you. That is why they are so important as life is irreplaceable. We do have special devices for the hearing impaired or for the sight impaired. Smoke Alarms that activate vibrating pads to include the sense of feel or strobe lights to flash brightly to alert you.
Are there different types of smoke alarms?
Yes, there are different types of smoke alarms, but only photo-optical alarms are allowed to be installed in Queensland. These alarms give an early warning of smoldering fires – the most common type of fatal house fire. Thermal alarms are available for harsh environments prone to causing false alarms such as garages. These work on the principle of a rate of change of temperature to sense a fire but do not give as early warning as smoke alarms.
Can smoke alarms be interconnected?
Yes, smoke alarms can, and must, be interconnected, meaning that if one alarm detects smoke, all interconnected alarms will sound simultaneously. Even if an alarm is a non-required alarm, it must do all that a required alarm does. This means you cannot place wireless alarms next to existing hard-wired alarms, not interconnect them, and be compliant. There can only be one smoke alarm system with all alarms incorporated. Additional to that, all hard-wired alarms must be replaced with hard-wired alarms. It is not legal to remove the hard-wired alarm and place a wireless alarm in that position. We will replace any existing hard-wired alarms with a new hard-wired alarm and interconnect to the others using Radio Frequency modules so there will be no messy holes, conduit or cabling.
Are there any additional features to consider when choosing a smoke alarm?

What should I do if my smoke alarm doesn't sound during a fire emergency?
If your smoke alarm fails to sound during a fire emergency, evacuate the premises immediately and contact emergency services. It is crucial to have a backup plan in place, such as a fire escape route, and to regularly test and maintain your smoke alarms to ensure their reliability.
