Smoke Alarm Installation

& Upgrades

Following January 1st, 2022 you won’t be able to rent or sell a property unless it is upgraded to the new legislation

When it comes to smoke alarm installation, it takes years of experience and training to understand how a fire works, how smoke moves, and the ideal positions for detecting the smoke earliest. There are even dead air zones – where a smoke alarm can be positioned that stops the smoke from reaching the smoke alarms and not alerting anybody.

Do I Need To Upgrade
My Smoke Alarms?

The Queensland Fire & Emergency Services Act was introduced into law in 2017. It’s purpose was to make domestic homes safer from fire following a number of tragic fatal house fires.

If selling or renting a home from 2022 you must upgrade.

If doing a substantial renovation in a private home you must upgrade. If you have problem alarms, or care about your family safety, you may take advantage of the advances in technology and upgrade your alarms.

All dwellings must fully comply by 2027. To meet the requirements they must be photoelectric smoke alarms (AS 3786-2014), interconnected so that all sound together, no older than ten years, installed on every level, installed in every bedroom, and installed in hallways outside the bedrooms, or in the most likely path of escape if there is no hallway.

At Glasshouse Home Safety, we are dedicated to providing exceptional smoke alarm installation services and are able to answer all your questions and quote to upgrade in minutes.

How Do You Know If Your
Smoke Alarms Are Compliant?

Here are a few ways to know if your smoke alarms that are currently installed are compliant with the new QLD Australia Standard:

  • Check the manufacture date: Smoke alarms must be less than ten years old, and the date of manufacture should be visible on the device.

  • Check the type of smoke alarm: Make sure your smoke alarms have the photoelectric symbol on them.

  • Check the placement of smoke alarms: Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. In addition, they must be installed on the ceiling, at least 300mm from any wall or light fitting.

  • Check interconnectivity: Smoke alarms must be interconnected, meaning that if one alarm is triggered, all alarms will sound.

If you are unsure if your smoke alarms comply with the new standard, contact Glasshouse Home Safety today!

I highly recommend Glasshouse Home Safety for their professionalism. During inspection it was noted that one of my smoke alarms was put in the wrong place when the house was built and GHHS provided all relevant documentation for my dispute with the builder so they agreed to fix it and my house is now compliant with fire safety regulations.

FAQs

Upgrading your existing smoke alarms is highly recommended to ensure compliance with current safety standards. It is essential to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, hallways that connect bedrooms, and on each level of the dwelling for optimal protection.
It is advisable to hire a licensed electrician or a licensed smoke alarm installer to handle the installation process. They have the knowledge and expertise to ensure proper positioning, wiring, and compliance with legal requirements.
Interconnected smoke alarms provide enhanced safety by allowing all alarms to sound simultaneously when one detects smoke. This early warning system ensures that everyone in the property is alerted promptly, providing more time to evacuate safely in the event of a fire.
Photoelectric smoke alarms are highly recommended due to their effectiveness in detecting smouldering fires that produce more smoke before flames erupt. They are also less prone to false alarms caused by cooking or steam.
Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, even if they appear to be functioning correctly. It is important to stay up-to-date with the latest technology and safety standards to ensure optimal performance.

The cost of smoke alarm upgrades or installations can vary depending on factors such as the number of alarms needed, the complexity of the wiring, and any additional requirements specific to your property. It is best to consult with a licensed electrician or a licensed smoke alarm installer who can provide a detailed quote based on your specific needs.

Smoke alarms should be installed in accordance with local regulations and guidelines. They should be strategically placed in areas where they can effectively detect smoke, such as bedrooms, hallways, and living areas. It is best to consult with a licensed electrician or a licensed smoke alarm installer to determine the optimal locations for smoke alarm installation in your specific property.

To schedule a smoke alarm upgrade or installation, contact Glasshouse Home Safety today. We will assess your needs, provide recommendations, and carry out the necessary installations to ensure your home is equipped with reliable and compliant smoke alarms.
