The QLD Fire & Emergency Services Act was introduced into law in 2017. If you sell, rent, or make big changes to your home from 2022 onwards, you need to upgrade your smoke alarms. By 2027, all homes must have these newer smoke alarms for safety.

To meet the requirements they must be interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms (AS 3786-2014), less than 10 years old, installed on every level, in every bedroom, and in hallways or likely escape paths.

Do I Need To upgrade
My Smoke Alarms?

Make sure your smoke alarms are less than 10 years old.
Check the type of smoke alarm: Make sure your smoke alarms have the photoelectric symbol on them.
Check your smoke alarm placement. Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. In addition, they must be installed on the ceiling, at least 300mm from any wall or light fitting.
Ensure your smoke alarms are interconnected. Meaning that if one alarm is triggered, all alarms will sound.
