No, definitely not. The brand and model of a smoke alarm play a major role in how well it performs and how often it false alarms. Because we service thousands of properties across Queensland, we’ve had the opportunity to see which brands consistently perform the best — and which ones tend to cause problems.
The difference comes down to quality of components, design, and manufacturing standards. As with most products, you get what you pay for — cheaper alarms are more likely to false alarm in humid or dusty conditions, while higher-quality alarms are engineered to handle those environments reliably.
That’s why we offer a range of smoke alarm options to suit different budgets and priorities:
Choosing the right smoke alarm brand isn’t just about compliance — it’s about protecting your home and family with equipment that performs when it matters most. If you want to avoid nuisance alarms and enjoy dependable protection, it’s worth investing in a reliable, high-quality smoke alarm.
Smoke alarms are crucial for early detection of smoke or fire in your home. They provide an early warning that allows you and your family to evacuate quickly or put out the potential fire in time, potentially saving lives and minimising property damage. Did you know when you sleep you have no sense of smell? We only have Five senses to warn us of impending danger from a fire. You won’t feel a fire until things are falling over, or the heat is becoming unbearable, which is way too late. A fire will double in size every thirty seconds and if the flame is up already then you have literally two minutes to escape. You won’t taste a fire. You won’t see the fire as your eyes are closed. That only leaves smell and sound. Smell is out when you are sleeping as mentioned. Generally, you are relying on the loud sound (minimum 85dBa) of the smoke alarms to alert you. That is why they are so important as life is irreplaceable. We do have special devices for the hearing impaired or for the sight impaired. Smoke Alarms that activate vibrating pads to include the sense of feel or strobe lights to flash brightly to alert you.
Smoke alarms are equipped with sensors that detect smoke particles in the air. When smoke particles are detected, the alarm emits a loud sound to alert occupants of potential danger.
All Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years, or sooner if they are not functioning properly or have been damaged. It’s rare that any photo-optical alarm will go the full ten years without issues as they sample so much air over that time that contaminants build up within them that affect their performance. That is why regular professional servicing is so essential – to regularly clean, reset and recalibrate them.
Yes, there are different types of smoke alarms, but only photo-optical alarms are allowed to be installed in Queensland. These alarms give an early warning of smoldering fires – the most common type of fatal house fire. Thermal alarms are available for harsh environments prone to causing false alarms such as garages. These work on the principle of a rate of change of temperature to sense a fire but do not give as early warning as smoke alarms.
Yes, smoke alarms can, and must, be interconnected, meaning that if one alarm detects smoke, all interconnected alarms will sound simultaneously. Even if an alarm is a non-required alarm, it must do all that a required alarm does. This means you cannot place wireless alarms next to existing hard-wired alarms, not interconnect them, and be compliant. There can only be one smoke alarm system with all alarms incorporated. Additional to that, all hard-wired alarms must be replaced with hard-wired alarms. It is not legal to remove the hard-wired alarm and place a wireless alarm in that position. We will replace any existing hard-wired alarms with a new hard-wired alarm and interconnect to the others using Radio Frequency modules so there will be no messy holes, conduit or cabling.
Yes, wall controllers are an essential addition in order to locate and silence any triggered false alarm. With all alarms interconnected it is often difficult to determine which alarm is the trigger alarm for fault finding. Wall controllers, although not required by the code, make this simple and easy and give the ability to silence alarms without climbing a ladder. Devices are available for hard-of- hearing occupants and can alert via vibrating pads and flashing lights. Thermal alarms are available for areas that are prone to false alarms due to harsh conditions such as garages and can be interconnected to the alarm system. Carbon Monoxide alarms are ideal for areas with wood heaters or gas stoves to ensure lethal gasses are detected. Hard-wired alarms can be provided with long life batteries so that you never have to replace a battery again. Consider your specific needs and preferences when selecting protection for your home.
Yes, smoke alarms can be interconnected with security systems, and some brands have monitoring of the alarms from your mobile phone. This integration provides a comprehensive fire protection system that can automatically trigger appropriate responses, such as notifying you of situations when you are absent from the property. Consult with us to determine the compatibility and requirements for interconnecting your smoke alarms with other systems.
If your smoke alarm fails to sound during a fire emergency, evacuate the premises immediately and contact emergency services. It is crucial to have a backup plan in place, such as a fire escape route, and to regularly test and maintain your smoke alarms to ensure their reliability.

We can do a complete upgrade within ten working days. It normally takes between an hour and an hour and a half depending on the size of the home. Once done we clean up, leave no mess, instruct you on how the devices work and issue a compliance certificate on the spot. We also leave a sticker under the sink with our phone number and a QR code to scan for help when you need it. Each year we will give you a reminder that it is time to do the annual service.
Yes. By 1 January 2027, all domestic dwellings in Queensland must comply with current smoke alarm legislation.
This requires photoelectric smoke alarms that comply with AS 3786:2014, are interconnected, and are installed in the required locations throughout the dwelling. The intent is not simply to have alarms present, but to have a system that provides early warning throughout the home as one complete system.
Yes. Smoke alarms installed to meet Queensland legislation must be photoelectric and comply with AS 3786:2014. They must not be ionisation alarms.
Ionisation alarms are no longer acceptable because they respond later to smouldering fires, which are the most common type of fatal house fire. Photoelectric alarms are designed to respond earlier in this stage, providing more time for occupants to escape.
Smoke alarms must be installed inside each bedroom, in hallways or areas connecting bedrooms, and on each storey of the dwelling.
Hallways are not unlimited. For alarms outside bedrooms, the requirement is not simply somewhere in a hallway or escape path, but within 3 metres of every bedroom door.
If there is no hallway, the smoke alarm must be installed between the bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling in the most likely path of escape.
This is about protecting the escape path. Occupants must be alerted in any area they need to pass through in order to escape, and not have an unprotected room in between. In some home layouts, more than one alarm may be required along that path to ensure protected areas all the way to the external escape point.
However, meeting these locations alone does not guarantee performance. Placement within those areas must consider airflow, ceiling configuration, fans, air-conditioning, and how smoke will actually travel in a real fire. This is where many installations fall short.
This is one of the most critical and most misunderstood aspects of installation.
Smoke alarms must be at least 300mm from walls and corners.
They must be at least 400mm clear of ceiling fan blade sweep, measured from the blade to the centre of the alarm. This becomes more complex on sloping ceilings.
Air-conditioning outlets were historically 400mm clearance, now moving to 900mm under AS 1670.6:2023.
All measurements are taken to the centre of the alarm.
Air movement and dead air spaces can prevent smoke reaching the alarm. Poor placement may look compliant but fail in a real fire.
Smoke alarms must be positioned at least 3 metres from cooktops.
This is a requirement to prevent nuisance alarms. Installing closer increases the risk of alarms being ignored or disabled.
Yes.
Dead air spaces are defined within the National Construction Code and include corners, near walls, and where cupboards or bulkheads sit underneath. These areas require at least 300mm clear space beneath the alarm.
Deep beams can also create separated ceiling pockets where smoke must build up before moving. This can delay detection and may require additional alarms or mounting on beam undersides.
Airflow-related issues also affect performance, including air-conditioning outlets, fans, windows, bathrooms, and kitchens.
An alarm can be installed and still not perform when needed.
Multiple frameworks apply:
